We asked Native Houstonian to plan a day in Houston and he came up with some pretty great recommendations. Here’s a great way to spend your day in Houston.

Sunset Destination

James Turrell Twilight Epiphany Skyspace installation at Rice University.  It is an amazing way to take in a sunset.  I have only been during the evening, but I believe they also have seating for sunrises. The seats are positioned so that you stare at the art installation as the sky changes color through the blue hour just before the sun goes down fully. More Info.

After Dinner Drink:

Public Services on Travis Street, Downtown Houston. The building is over 100 years old and is a landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Incredible architecture inside and out. I always love heading to this bar after dinner because of the unique, old world atmosphere and super knowledgeable bar tenders.  Being in downtown Houston at night is rare these days, but it’s a nice change of scenery.

Neighborhood Bars:

Better Luck Tomorrow (BLT): Located on Yale in the Heights, this tiny bar has great cocktails and a fantastic small menu to curb any appetite.  Award winning chef Justin Yu is known for his tasting menu style at Theodore Rex (formerly Oxheart) and opened this bar on the opposite end of the spectrum.  Modern neon lights line the back-bar setting a super futuristic like spaceship vibe. Oh, the best part, the PATTY MELT.  Believe me and order one… you won’t regret it.

Eight Row Flint: Taco and Whiskey bar in the Heights off Yale and 11th. Queso, guacamole, beef cheek tacos, and a margarita that I believe to be the best in this Tex-Mex cuisine filled city.  It was once a gas station/auto shop and since been converted into this bar with a permanent food truck kitchen. This place is also known to have one of the city’s longest list of Whiskeys and Bourbons, but my personal favorite drink here is the Frozen Gin and Tonic with Campari floater.  Gotta add the Campari floater!
